Islamabad United launches the Biggest Sports Book in Pakistan history

‘United We Won – The Journey To The Shooting Star’, is a pictorial story of United’s journey to victory

Lahore, 30 November 2016 – To commemorate their victory in the inaugural HBL PSL, Islamabad United have launched the biggest sports book based on any tournament in Pakistan’s history. The release of the book illustrates the desire the franchise has to introduce international standards of practice to the country, particularly in the way they commemorate their successes . After a successful launch in Dubai last month, (Available at: the book is now available to purchase in Pakistan. The book was designed by international designers, and was printed in Hong Kong.
The 300 page, 12 inches by 12 inches ‘door stopper’ is the biggest sports book ever published in Pakistan. The book includes essays by Ali Naqvi, owner of Islamabad United and Dean Jones, Head Coach of the team. Both essays describe the journey of United before and during the tournament culminating in its championship victory.
Profusely rich in images and information, the book has over 450 images, including some never previously seen photographs of players and other celebrities associated with the team. These include images from the PSL 1 Draft, United’s colourful Team Launch event, images of each of the matches United played and behind the scene events during the tournament.
The book also provides detailed stats on each of United’s PSL matches, ball-by-ball description of some important landmarks of PSL, including Sharjeel Khan’s century, and over 100 other trivia from the tournament.
Regarding the book the owners of Islamabad United, in the foreword of the book, describe it by saying, “Most Pakistanis are cricket crazy. Therefore for a person to have a chance to be close to their cricket heroes is truly an honour and a privilege. To then go on to have your own cricket team is unbelievable. Beyond that, for that team to be part of the first ever professional cricket league of your country is unimaginable. Then to top it all off, for that team to go on to be the champions and lift the first Pakistan Super League trophy is the kind of thing that can only happens in dreams or in movies.
It happened though. And IT happened to Islamabad United.
Over a period of twenty weeks, Islamabad United went on from being a non-existent entity to a household name in Pakistan. Over a hundred million viewers watched the team’s matches during the entire length of the tournament, from the 4th of February to the 23rd of February, 2016. This publication is a visual travelogue of that very journey. “
At the book’s launch in Dubai on the 19th of October 2016, Ali Naqvi, the owner of Islamabad United, said “Proper documentation of events is a pre-requisite in developing a long-lasting and globally competitive franchise in any field. This book is another testament of our promise of bringing global standards to PSL.”
The launch was attended by Islamabad United players, Wasim Akram and Najam Sethi.
Addressing the ceremony, Ali Naqvi said: “It was a journey into the unknown and we followed the basic rules of the business. We hired the best ones in the form of Wasim, Misbah and Dean Jones and let them execute their plans.We lost two early matches and were written off, but the team did not panic. The conducive atmosphere in the dressing room helped the team gel and we eventually lifted the inaugural PSL trophy. We tried to document this journey in a form of this book.”
One of the stars of the 2016 event Sharjeel Khan said at the event, “The PSL has brought a sea change in my career. It has provided me a chance to stage a comeback to the national side.”
Misbah-ul-Haq, the captain of Islamabad United, said, “This is a positive development in Pakistan cricket. This shows Islamabad United’s desire to introduce new concepts to Pakistan cricket, and their aspiration to truly commemorate our successes.”
Najam Sethi, the Chairman of the Pakistan Super League, lauded the initiative saying, “One of our aims behind the Pakistan Super League was to create an environment for people to do things that haven’t been done in Pakistan before, to encourage new developments. Also, as someone who has been associated with the publishing world I have a familiarity with coffee table books. And in both its ingenuity and quality this book represents those aims perfectly.”
