2 years into the PSL journey, but the memories created by Islamabad United in these two seasons will easily last a lifetime, from the lows of a crushing defeat in a playoff game to winning the maiden PSL the side has seen a lot. Let’s look at the best moments of Islamabad United from the first two seasons.
1. Maiden win vs Karachi Kings
After two losses in their opening campaign, Islamabad United won their first game against Karachi Kings by 2 runs. The first win is always a sweet one and it was made more sweet by the fact that they won the game by defending a low total. Through some clinical bowling and tight fielding, Islamabad United managed to defend a low total by fighting for the entire game, a tenet which is a part of the side now.
2. Islamabad United unearthing Shadab Khan
Shadab Khan is now the darling of Pakistan after his exploits at the Champions Trophy, but before his international fame the leggie was part of Islamabad United in the second season of the PSL, he was picked as a supplementary pick and did not disappoint his side. His googly and his stock delivery flummoxing batsmen in the PSL and later in the international circuit. A great moment for Islamabad United where the focus is to unearth talent which will go on to help the national side.
3. Starting off PSL2 with a win against Peshawar Zalmi
After conceding 190 runs in 20 overs, Islamabad faced a daunting task to chase down the total against a side which was the best bowling side in the previous season and had bowlers like Junaid Khan, Hasan Ali, who come a few months later would be instrumental for the side in the CT. But the foreign players stepped up for Islamabad and managed to chase down a mammoth total in a rain affected with ease. The win also saw the side stretch their winning streak to 6 games from last season.
4. Rumman Raees’s celebration
Rumman Raees is a cool bowler, like his action his game is pretty simple, bowl in the right areas and you will be rewarded. But there is something other than his bowling which makes us wish he picks more wickets and that’s his celebration. His celebration is now associated with the Islamabad side and it is something the fans love.
5. One run win against Quetta Gladiators
Quetta needed 7 runs from 12 balls to win the game, which would mean Islamabad United would need to win their remaining 2 games to qualify for the playoffs. In most games this situation would mean that the chasing side will win the game and with some balls to spare, but Misbah Ul Haq is a captain who believes in making the game as tough as possible for the opposition and he made sure that Quetta would have to earn every run from then on to win the game. Raees bowled an over which saw him concede only 2 runs and then Sami bowled brilliantly in the final over to defend 5 runs and hand Islamabad United a famous win in a game which can be called the best PSL game in the past 2 seasons.
6. Islamabad United – The first PSL champions
Islamabad United were on the brink of elimination, but they won their final 2 group games and qualified for the playoffs where every game was a knockout game. On the route of winning their final they beat Lahore Qalandars in their last group game, Karachi Kings in the eliminator, Peshawar Zalmi in the second qualifier and Quetta Gladiators in the final. A memorable moment for all Islamabad fans which saw their team win through grit and determination and it was more beautiful when it was Kaptaan Misbah Ul Haq who won the game by taking a single.
