Pakistan cricket team is exactly like the mood of the nation it represents – unpredictable. On its day, even the best one cannot beat it. Pakistan has a list of memorable matches; here are five moments which truly define Pakistan’s cricket mood when the team came out victorious when no one was expecting it to.
Oval test 1954
Pakistan was touring England for the first time and no one expected anything big coming from the team who had recently been inducted into the test playing nations. However, team Pakistan under the captaincy of Abdul Hafeez Kardar had some big plans. In second innings – 164 – it relied upon the brilliance of Fazal Mahmood who took 6 wickets in the first innings. The second innings of England was no different. English batsmen had no answer to the leg cutters of Fazal and Pakistan won the match by 24 runs. Fazal took a total of 12 wickets in the match, it was Pakistan’s first victory against England and announced arrival of a big player in the game.
Sydney test 1977
Sydney test of 1977 was no different than the Oval of 1954, it was so important that PTV had to make special arrangements to telecast the final session of the match. While chasing 211 in first innings Pakistan stumbled before Asif Iqbal came to bat and scored a wonderful ton, Asif’s partnership with Javed Miandad helped Pakistan score 360 runs. This time Imran Khan pulled a Fazal Mahmood – Imran took 6 wickets in each innings – Australia got all out giving a target of only 32 runs. Imran was invincible in that test match, bowling fast and swinging the ball like a pro, he had put so much effort in the match that he tore his shirt while bowling continuously. Majid Khan played the winning stroke.
Austral-Asia Cup, Final: India v Pakistan at Sharjah 1986
Perhaps the last ball of the Austral-Asia Cup final has the biggest impact in the minds of whole Indo-Pak subcontinent. India can never forget that one last ball which turned the definite win upside down for them and Pakistan eventually came out as victorious. Javed Miandad was the man of the moment who expected a low full toss coming and hit that one for the six, this started Pakistan’s winning streak in Sharjah against India.
World Cup 1992
What is better than the feeling of being on the top of the game, words cannot define the feeling. Pakistan was never in the position to win that cup with a team which was missing its leading paceman. Captain of the team was injured, vice-captain was unfit, the deputy vice-captain was batting like the last man, main fast bowler and spinner had no clue how to ball. Even then, in the end it was Pakistan who won the World Cup eventually due to great teamwork under the leadership of Imran Khan.
World T20 2009
Pakistan was going through the darkest time of its cricket and country as a whole, International cricket ceased its presence in Pakistan after the attack on Sri Lankan team, news about blasts and suicide attack was a regular affair. Under such circumstances team Pakistan toured England to play the world T20 championship. Pakistan lost its first match and chief selector resigned, and then started a historic story. Pakistan kept winning matches till the very end beating the favorites Sri Lanka to lift the cup and to give a reason to smile to the nation deprived from happiness.
